Recently we have formed a Joint venture
with a Belgium company to manufacture Metal o-ring seals.
Here is the information on seals to be manufactured.
General Information
High Performance Seals for extreme service conditions.
Engineering
Development and Engineering of new products is conducted in
close cooperation with universities.
In house testing equipment facilitates real hardware testing
and comparison with FEA results.
The OystersealŪ in this catalogue is one of the results of
this bespoken cooperation.
Sealing Concept:
The sealing performance of resilient Metal Seals is based on
a the relative high specific contact load at the sealing
line and a certain resiliency or spring back of the elastic
metal seal.
The seating load and the corresponding sealing line width,
are a function of the selected seal type, cross section,
material, material thickness and the alloy properties
itself.
Depending on the required tightness and the media to be
sealed, a specific seating load will be required. Plating or
coating with soft, ductile material will provide better
sealing by filling up groove imperfections. The seating load
will make the ductile layer to flow and fill up the groove
surface irregularities.
Resilient Metal Seals require a controlled compression.
Typically these seals are installed in a machined groove, or
the compression is limited by a so called retainer plate.

General Properties:
Sizes: Diameters from 5 mm to 7 meter.
Cross section from 0,8 mm to 12,5 mm.
Temperature: Cryogenic to +750°C.
Pressure: From ultra high vacuum to +500 MPa.
Available in circular, race track, oval and other shapes.
Excellent resistance to corrosion and radiation.
Maintains elasticity or spring back over an extended service
life.
Does not suffer from explosive decompression.
Capable of reaching tightness better than 10–9 mbar.l/s.
Radiation resistant.
Material Selection:
The application parameters determine which material should
be used.
Temperature and media are important aspects in selecting the
material.
HTMS offers materials such as 321 stainless steel, InconelŪ
and other high temperature alloys.
Metal O-ring: Specifications and Applications
The metal o-ring seals of Kwality products can be used where
non-metallic seals will not seal properly or do not offer
the required reliability for the application, usually due to
temperatures, pressures, or the environment. Metallic O-Ring
Seals are long lasting seals and unlike non-metallic seals,
they are not subject to failure due to incompatibility with
the environment, out gassing or from deterioration due to
age.
O-Ring Seals are generally fabricated from tubing consisting
of stainless steel or high temperature alloys such as
Inconel (currently in development). These materials are
frequently used because they offer resilient properties that
enable the seal to "Spring-Back".
Hollow metal O-Rings are used as static face
type seals and should not be used as a dynamic seal. While
the majority of seals are circular, many seals are produced
in rectangular, racetrack, and other various shapes and
configurations with limitations only on the corner radii.
The following are key elements in specifying the proper seal
determining the base material:
• Temperature limits/duration
• Media to be sealed
• System pressure
• Available seating load
Plating and Coatings
Plating or Coating of the O-Ring Seal provides a soft
malleable surface that will smear into small imperfections
in the mating hardware, enhancing seal performance.
Shaped Seals
Metallic O-ring Seals can be produced in various shapes.
Application Characteristics
The typical application places a Metallic O-Ring Seal in an
axial compression between two parallel surfaces, which are
square to the fluid passage or vessel axis. The seal is
usually located in an open or closed groove in one of the
surfaces. The seal can also be located in a retainer, which
eliminates the need for machining a groove. The mating
hardware when bolted, torque, clamped or fastened tightly to
the surface enclosing the ring, compresses the seal, forming
a positive joint
O-Seals are commonly used in the following industries.
• Aerospace
• Oil and petrochemical industries
• Nuclear
• Plastic molding
• Chemical/Plastics
• Vacuum Processing/Research
• Diesel engines
• Valves
• Pumps
• Compressors
Kwality Products can also make following seals available to
there customers through there Joint venture partners:
Metal C-rings:
Metal C-Ring for Internal Pressure
Metal C-Ring for External Pressure
Metal C-Ring for Internal Pressure (CI) and External
Pressure (CE) are designed for high pressure (system
pressure energised). They require low bolting load and have
good spring back.
Metal Spring energized C-rings:
Spring Energised C-Ring for Internal Pressure
Spring Energised C-Ring for External Pressure
Metal CS-Ring for Internal Pressure (CSI) and External
Pressure (CSE) are designed for high pressure and excellent
tightness performance (system pressure energised). They
require high bolting load and have good spring back.
